International fencing body's false redemption

The day after a controversial judging decision, fencing’s besieged governing body engaged in serious damage control.

According to the head of the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) on Tuesday, the International Fencing Federation (FIE) said it would award Shin A-lam a “special medal” for her sportsmanship after she was robbed of a gold-medal opportunity.

“They are very sorry and sympathetic to her,” KOC President Park Yong-sung said. “They are going to recognize this with some kind of event.”

On Monday, the 25-year-old lost to Germany’s Britta Heidemann in their women’s epee semifinal, but her coach complained that the clock had gotten stuck with one second left as Shin fended off Heidemann’s attack twice and that the German’s decisive hit came after time was up.

While officials discussed the appeal, a sobbing Shin had to stay on the piste for nearly an hour according to the sport’s rules with about 8,000 spectators watching,

But the initial decision was upheld, forcing Team Korea to officially launch an appeal with the FIE, questioning the timekeeping toward the end of the match.

Park said the FIE made the special medal offer, acknowledging a possible error with the timing equipment.

In addition, the fencing body’s spokeswoman told AFP, “Of course, we understand the frustration and feelings of the athlete. That’s why we decided to give this award.” However, the FIE rejected Team Korea’s official protest.

Shin said she would refuse to accept the improvised award. “It does not make me feel better because it’s not an Olympic medal,” she said in a media interview.

“I won’t accept the result because I believe it was a mistake.”   

 

 

신아람, 스포츠맨십 세계에 알리는 행사 연다

석연찮은 경기진행으로 억울하게 올림픽 메달을 놓친 신아람(26·계룡시청)이 국제펜싱연맹(FIE) '특별상'을 받는다.

박용성 대한체육회장은 31일(현지시간) 영국 런던 올림픽파크의 런던올림픽 메인미디어센터(MPC)에서 기자회견을 열고 국제펜싱연맹이 신아람의 스포츠맨 정신을 높이 평가하며 특별상을 주겠다고 제안해 이를 받아들였다고 밝혔다.

특별상의 형태나 수여 방법, 절차 등은 대한체육회와 FIE가 좀더 협의를 진행하기로 했다.

박 회장은 이에 앞서 이날 오전 FIE 회장과 사무총장을 만나 신아람의 출전 경기에서 논란이 된 시간계측 등의 실수를 인정하고 관련자에 대한 적절한 조치와 함께 재발 방지책을 마련하라고 요구했다. FIE는 이날 우리 선수단이 정식으로 제출한 소청을 기각했다.

하지만 박용성 회장에 따르면 FIE는 "여러 문제가 겹친 어쩔 수 없는 사건이었다"면서 "하지만 신아람이 보여준 스포츠맨십은 높이 평가한다. 이를 기리는 행사를 하자"고 제안했다.

FIE는 런던올림픽 기간 특별 메달이나 트로피를 수여하는 등 신아람의 스포츠맨 정신을 세계에 알리도록 하자고 해 대한체육회는 이를 받아들였다.

신아람은 30일 영국 엑셀 런던 사우스 아레나에서 열린 2012 런던올림픽 펜싱 여자 에페 개인전 브리타 하이데만(독일)과의 준결승에서 연장 승부 끝에 종료 직전 찌르기를 당해 5-6으로 졌다.

비긴 채 경기를 마쳤다면 신아람이 경기 시작 전에 얻은 어드밴티지로 결승에 오를 수 있었지만 마지막 1초를 남기고 시간이 줄지 않는 상황에서 통한의 공격을 허용했다.

신아람은 결국 3·4위 결정전에서 쑨위제(중국)에게도 11-15로 져 결국 메달 획득에 실패했다.
